Braids have been around for thousands of years, dating back as far as 3500 B.C. in Africa. One of the earliest known styles, cornrows, originated with the Himba people of Namibia and other African tribes. Braiding was more than just a hairstyle — it was a form of art, identity, and tradition. Different braid patterns could represent a person’s tribe, age, marital status, wealth, and social rank.
Braids were also a practical style, helping to manage and protect textured hair in hot climates. Over time, the style spread across cultures and continents, becoming both a fashion statement and a symbol of cultural pride.
Lets get into the techniques of braiding and other styles that are similar.
How to Do Cornrows
1.
Start with clean, detangled hair
You can part the hair into sections using a comb before you start.
2.
Part a small row
Use a rat-tail comb to part out the section where you want your first cornrow.
3.
Divide the section into three small strands
Start at the front of the section near the hairline.
4.
Begin braiding close to the scalp
Cross the outer strands under the middle strand, adding small amounts of hair as you go along.
5.
Keep the braid tight and flat
Continue picking up and adding hair as you braid toward the back of the head.
6.
Secure the end
Once you're no longer adding hair, finish the braid like a regular three-strand braid and secure with an elastic.
Cornrows can be worn in straight lines, curved designs, or creative patterns and are known for their neat, long-lasting hold.
How to Do a Basic Braid
1.
Start with brushed hair
Make sure the hair is detangled and smooth.
2.
Divide into three sections
Separate the hair evenly.
3.
Begin braiding
Cross the right section over the middle, then the left over the new middle.
4.
Continue the pattern
Alternate crossing right and left sections over the middle until you reach the end.
5.
Secure the braid
Use a small hair tie or elastic band to hold it in place.
This simple braid is the foundation for many other styles!
